Good News: Quite a few things turned out better than expected such as German first-quarter GDP growth, US retail sales, regional manufacturing, builders’ sentiments, and inflation trend.

Bad News: Lingering Euro debt problems, and Greek political uncertainties with a new government. 

Observations: The market opened higher but started to slide back one hour toward closing time. The three major indexes lost ground again today. Over the last 10 trading days, the Dow suffered 9 losses. The other two indexes only fared a little better.

Good News: Not much.

Bad News: Lingering Euro debt problems, and recent $2 billion loss of JPMorgan Chase.  

Observations: The market was weighed down by the bad financial news both in US and Europe. All the major indexes spent the whole day in negative territory.

Good News: US consumer confidence rose to the highest point in four years.

Bad News: China’s industrial production and other indicators show that growth is slackening. JP Morgan Chase reporting $2 billion loss in risky investment jolted the financial sector. 

Observations: The early rising momentum could not sustain. The three major indexes did not change much. For the whole week, the market has retreated since last Friday.

Good News: US jobless claims for last week better than expected.

Bad News: Cisco gave a rather negative projection for next quarter. JP Morgan Chase reported two-billion-dollar loss in assets. 

Observations: The market surged after opening but failed to maintain the momentum. The Dow ended a four-day losing streak with a small gain. The other major indexes showed little change.

Good News: Disney and some other major companies reported better-than-expected earnings.

Bad News: Worries about Euro debts especially Greece and Spain.

Observations: Like yesterday, the market dived then recovered later well above the low points. Still, the major indexes closed in negative territories. This is the sixth consecutive day of decline for the Dow.

Good News: Not much.

Bad News: Lingering doubts that the Euro zone was able to solve its debt crisis after the governments of France and Greece were voted out of office during the weekend.

Observations: The stock market plunged after opening. Like yesterday, it began to recover around midday. At the close, the three indexes stayed in negative territory but well above their lows for the day.

Good News: Better-than-expected increases in German factory orders and US consumer credit.

Bad News: Debt crisis in the Euro zone was resurrected after existing leaders in France and Greece were voted out of power.

Observations: Two days of consecutive declines extended into the early morning hours. Then the three major indexes started to recover. At the close, only the Dow showed a moderate loss while the other two remained unchanged.

Observations: Today the bears were in control. Stocks fell across the board. The Nasdaq seemed to suffer the most.

Bad News: US unemployment slackened in April according to a private source, to be confirmed by Labor Department on Friday.

Observations: The loss of momentum yesterday continued into this morning, but later all the three major indexes recovered close to the flat line. The Nasdaq even registered a gain.
